56. The power of the analogy

We’re in the midst of a seven episode series on the Dale Carnegie model of how evidence DEFEATS doubt. We’ll be using the acronym DEFEATS to teach how to bring credible evidence into your presentation.

A = Analogies

Four keys to using an analogy well:

  1. Pick something simple for comparison that the audience knows
  2. Start with the simple and explain it fully
  3. Then explain the complex, referring back to the simple at each step
  4. Use the term, “That’s just like” to make the connection for your audience

If you are willing to take the time to find the right comparison for an analogy and follow these four guidelines, you’ll make the complex seem simple to your audience.
